Bedford

Beautiful, booming Bedford is a small, friendly community consisting primarily of professional middle class families. Only 15 minutes away from Halifax, Dartmouth and the Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport, and offering outstanding parkland, shopping and schools, Bedford was rated by MacLean’s Magazine as being the “Best community to live in Canada”.

History: The history of Bedford began when Governor Edward Cornwallis hired John Gorham and his Rangers to erect a fort on the shore of Bedford Basin. It was named Fort Sackville after Lionel Cranfield, Viscount Sackville and first Duke of Dorset. The area around the fort became known as Sackville until the mid-1850’s when it became Bedford.

  • Parks and Recreation: There are at least twelve excellent parks or playgrounds offering every outdoor activity imaginable.

Amenities: There are two large shopping malls offering a wide variety of shops and services including the famous Pete’s Frootique and you can stroll the core area of the Bedford Highway and drop in on the interesting shops, offices, restaurants and churches.

Getting Around: You can walk and bike to many amenities in Bedford. Commuting to downtown Halifax can be a challenge at rush hours but a new interchange to Highway 102 at the top of Larry Uteck Drive offers another option for drivers. As well, Metro Transit offers very good regular bus service throughout the region.

Home Styles: A wide range of housing styles is available in Bedford from newer condo, town home and executive home developments, to established areas offering bungalows, split entry and side split homes, and a range of two story homes.

Example of Home Prices: Condos start at $150,000 and go up to the $600,000 range for luxury suites with views of the Bedford Basin. Single Family Homes range from $250,000 to over $2,000,000.
